The Naked Philosopher
Instructions on philosophy / words by Violette Coquette
The Naked Philosopher.
There are very few practical guidelines for
Becoming a Naked Philosopher.
However, the process is quite simple,
though it does require your undivided attention.
–
First, philosophy requires shadows.
A flickering candle, a golden glow of light?
That will do.
Next, a cocktail: with complex flavours, in a very cold crystal glass.
It needs to hold the mysteries of the universe
In its dense matter.
Let its flavours linger in your throat
And give your thoughts space to roam.
–
The next step to becoming a Naked Philosopher
Is contemplation.
The exposed flesh of a wrist will do.
Admire it, be stunned by it,
Wonder to yourself as you gaze at your wrist,
Have I ever seen a wrist so goddamn gorgeous
In my entire life?
Go on. Do it – gaze at your own wrist.
And the answer is no,
You have not ever seen a wrist so goddamn gorgeous
In your entire life.
You take a sip of your cocktail to deal with this
Overwhelming reality.
–
Now, you have begun to observe the world, but
You require more material for consideration.
So, you question the purpose of a sleeve
Be it mutton, chopped, or Mugler,
Is it needed?
Necessary?
What if it was to fall away,
Or part like the sea…
Or find new purpose as a fold,
A velvet waterfall
Or perhaps – nothing at all.
–
But even to be nothing is not to be nothing.
Dark matter fills its many nothing spaces,
With a satisfying gravitational pull…
–
Humans tend to dream of ascending great heights,
But what if, instead, we dreamt of descending down, down down?
There is a sparkling Universe hidden in every discovery,
And the truth is not singular –
Rather, it curves, slopes, and sparkles.
Like a many-faceted crystal
Each dimension its own radiant galaxy.
–
To be a Naked Philosopher,
You ‘must’ do nothing, but you
Choose to question everything
For the simple pleasure of the pursuit.
You seek out – vigorous – debate
And take pleasure in – diverse – perspectives.
–
To be a Naked Philosopher
Is to acknowledge that clothing holds no inherent meaning
And that it therefore can be held – loosely.
Life is indeed absurd and yet –
There is a freedom in its absurdity
A free fall into absurd curves,
The junctures between celestial bodies
An entire Universe or a single thought.
–
To be a Naked Philosopher
One must simply have the courage
To expose the tender inner thoughts
And philosophize.
